Sustainable Ruminant Genetics (SRG), in partnership with the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), continues to deliver Supporting Agri-Professionals Training as part of the Bovine Genetics Project (BGP). The training programme has been designed to equip Agri-Professionals with the genetic knowledge required to support farmers in making more informed breeding and genetic decisions.

As major players in the NI cattle breeding industry, members of the AI Services team have recently taken part in the latest Supporting Agri-Professionals Programme delivered through the Bovine Genetics Project.

The training explores a range of topics including cattle genetics, genotyping, genetic indexes and the role of the Bovine Genetics Genotyping Scheme in driving long-term genetic improvement. Participants also received guidance on using the SRG User Portal and understanding benchmarking reports, allowing genetic information to be applied more effectively at farm level.

As part of DAERA’s Sustainable Agriculture Programme (SAP), the Bovine Genetics Project is aimed at improving the genetic potential of beef and dairy herds across Northern Ireland. Using cattle performance records and genomic analysis, the project provides farmers with valuable information to assist with breeding selections, helping to improve productivity, herd performance, efficiency and animal health while also contributing to environmental sustainability.

By continuing to build knowledge across the industry, the programme is helping ensure farmers receive accurate guidance and practical support as the Bovine Genetics Project develops further across Northern Ireland.
