On Wednesday 13 May 2026, Sustainable Ruminant Genetics (SRG) officially launched the new SRG User Portal at  Balmoral Show. The launch represents a major milestone in supporting genetic improvement and data-driven breeding decisions across Northern Ireland’s beef and dairy sectors.

This digital platform, which can be accessed through the SRG website at www.srgni.com is designed to give farmers easy access to tools and insights designed to improve herd efficiency, animal health, productivity and long-term sustainability across both beef and dairy enterprises.

The Bovine Genetics Project (BGP) is delivered by SRG in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) as part of the Sustainable Agriculture Programme (SAP). The project has been developed to provide farmers with practical genetic information to support more informed breeding and herd management decisions using genomic evaluations and on-farm performance data.

A key focus of the launch was demonstrating how  the better use of data can support improved herd performance. Visitors attending  Balmoral Show had the opportunity to see live demonstrations of the portal, speak directly with the SRG team and learn more about how the BGP will operate in practice.

Speaking at the launch, SRG CEO John Moore said:

“The SRG User Portal provides farmers with practical tools and reliable data to support better breeding decisions, improved herd performance and long-term sustainability within the livestock sector.”

The launch marks an important milestone for SRG as the organisation moves into the next phase of delivering the Bovine Genetics Project, with continued emphasis on farmer engagement, industry collaboration and measurable outcomes for the sector.

The next significant milestone for the project will see the roll-out of the DAERA-funded cattle genotyping scheme, which will commence in September this year. This world-leading scheme will enable herd owners to improve the accuracy of breeding decisions by identifying traits, such as feed efficiency and health-related characteristics, at an earlier stage. Farmers can register for the genotyping scheme on the SRG User Portal.
